Time goes by in the blink of an eye. You might as well make it count with someone you love.

Mikki Zip’s grandparents did that for 57 years. Her new song, “Holding Hands,” was released on December 16 — the one-year anniversary of her grandfather’s passing — to celebrate their long-lasting love story.

“It’s about the process of growing old with someone and how, when you’re young, you don’t even realize all the memories you’re going to make together,” she said. “Then, when your time here is done, the family you built and those memories are what you’re going to remember most.”

Zip co-wrote “Holding Hands” with Zach Allen and Laurel Sabadosh — and the creative process played a role in her healing following her grandfather’s passing.

“After my papa passed, I could really only write sad songs,” she said. “Then, my gramma told that, no matter how sick my papa got, they fell asleep holding hands every night. That hit me. I brought it into the co-write, because I felt I couldn’t do it on my own. I didn’t want it to be a sad song, but just a song about their love.”
