"Artist Anonymous" by Jhantu Randall

With the internet, you're bombarded by trolls countless times throughout your web surfing, but within these same social media platforms, sometimes there lies a genuine talent who just likes to blend in with the crowd as they fly under the radar. I met the artist for this interview through a mutual friend online (A friend who I also know personally, I rarely add complete strangers) and he agreed to participate under the condition that I keep his identity hidden. He doesn’t want the spotlight, without interjecting himself, it allows his work to speak for itself. Armed with a Staedtler drafting set that he leaves on 2B, he refers to these as his weapons of mass destruction as he slays the page with pencil sketch portraits. From portraits of 2pac, B-Real, and Eazy E too a more macabre lineup, each lifelike portrait takes him anywhere from 2-6 hours to complete. With Halloween right around the corner, his portrait of Michael Myers definitely stands out. It’s accompanied by his portrait...

Ode to Langston Hughes by Jhantu Randall

Read More by Jhantu Randall What becomes of a dream deferred? Does it go away never to be seen or heard? If it never comes to fruition, does it float away? Or does it embed itself in the subconscious of my brain? Is it a goal or merely a dream? Maybe it’s a future inevitability I can’t yet perceive Is it a luxury truly predestined for me? Or is it just an array of random events lined up with my beliefs? When it’s there, is it I choose not to see but rather to stare? Afraid to take charge as I claim I never cared Talent and success aren't always synonymous But I can’t accept just part of it; in the end I must inherit all of it Live by the blank page, it’s so enticing Little things, like getting a cupcake with extra icing Write and relive every experience in these words So tell me, what becomes of a dream deferred?

Watch "Good Friday" music video by John Jigg$ X DJ Concept

Long Island natives John Jigg$ & DJ Concept drop their first collaborative EP. Good Friday is an exercise in pure hip-hop. This album finds the duo at the top of their respective games. Jigg$ wordplay is top notch as he spits the truth on the opening track “If you play this loud enough you can hear Jesus, n!ggas frontin so I’m huntin like it’s deer season, for the rap fans ears I prepare thesis.” The opener also features some fire bars from fellow Long Islander SmooVth. As the album continues, Jigg$ make it clear from the jump “Paintin a motion picture with every scripture. John Jigg$ / Concept it’s a deadly mixture”. A truer statement was never made as he rips through the grimey banger. Next up, DJ Concept takes the mood from grimey to fly as the joint Savior Faire smooths things out a bit at the halfway point of the EP. The albums title track is up next. Jigg$ makes his intentions known “Begging for trouble I could probably promise you more of it, work the hardest at targeting al...

Tech N9ne Takes Tacoma (by Jhantu Randall)

In the past you've seen articles on Gerald “Realife” Beamon, Lazerrick Holiday and George Cain, well tonight it all comes together as 03 Entertainment brought Tech N9ne and Krizz Kaliko to Tacoma for the first time with the Independent Grind Tour 2018! With the show slated to start at 7, I pulled up to the theater off of 4th and St Helens Ave to a large crowd of Strange fans, Juggalo’s, and other groups that Tech’s music unites together. Talking to local group, the Lab Rats, we discussed the energy we expected the show to bring as we all shared our stories on how Tech’s music has made an impact on our own lives. It may sound co...

Chris Cornell: A Voice Immortalized (by Jhantu Randall)

by Jhantu Randall It was a cloudy, overcast day which held brief periods of rain throughout. Packed together in front of the MoPop museum (formally known as the Experience Music Project) the crowds gathered as 5th street was shut down. A purple cover draped over the statue of Audioslave and Soundgarden frontman, Seattle’s own Chris Cornell who tragically hung himself last year after a show at the Fox Theater in Detroit, Michigan. While I wasn’t personally a huge fan of the genre, I’d have to be dumb, deaf and naive to stand here and say that it wasn’t an accompanying soundtrack to my childhood in the Seattle area growing up. Sure, bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam always seem to be brought up as the pinnacle of Seattle’s grunge scene in the 90’s, but during this time bands like Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden definitely made their mark on an emerging scene which spit in the face of consumerism and mocked the increasing safety and corporatization of music. Not only did the sound itself...
