Vinnie Paz’s 2nd EP “Jacinto’s Praying Mantis” Will Hold Fans Off Fine Until Something Bigger Comes Down the Pipe (EP Review)

Philadelphia underground veteran  Vinnie Paz following up his 8th album All Are Guests in the House of God  roughly 7 months after with his 2nd EP. Breaking out as the MC of  Jedi Mind Tricks  & the leader of  the Army of the Pharaohs collective, he put out his first 2 solo albums  Season of the Assassin  &  God of the Serengeti  in 2010 & 2012 respectively until returned in 2016 with  The Cornerstone of the Corner Store .  The Pain Collector  would become my favorite of his since his first 2 but since  as above so below , Paz has been staying consistent by delivering a new solo effort every year & is carrying on tradition by making  Jacinto’s Praying Mantis  a physical exclusive. “Contra Cocaine” is a boom bap opener talking about killing every chance he gets whereas my favorite cut on the EP “Blood Bank Affair” produced by The Czar-Keys & Scott Stallone hooking h...

This is the 3rd & final full-length studio LP from Arlington, Texas emcee Claas alongside Louisville/Atlanta duo The Horde consisting of Bukshot & Boondox or collectively known as The Underground Avengers. Forming in 2012 off an eponymous debut EP, they got back together in the summer of 2018 to have Majik Ninja Entertainment back their debut album  Anomaly 88  & returning almost a year later for the sophomore effort  Dark Matter . A 2nd EP  The Gateway  was released in the fall of 2022 & coming off an appearance at Astronomicon 7 couple months ago, they’re taking us to  Oblivion  after 12 years in the making allegedly. After the “Judgment is Upon You” intro & the “Reassembled” skit, the unhinged first song “Who Dat?!” produced by 7 who did UGA’s coda in it’s entirety leaving everyone running when the trio comes through whereas the morbidly flavored trap joint “Diablo” telling the ...

UFO Fev is Coming “Strapped” Over Fredro Starr Production (Album Review)

Harlem, New York emcee UFO Fev teaming with Fredro Starr to produce his 8th LP. Coming up in 2014 off his full-length debut  Around My Way , it wasn’t until 2020 when he saw his biggest year yet by dropping not 1 but 3 well received projects: the Statik Selektah-produced sophomore effort  Fresh Air  along with the Termanology-produced debut EP  From El Barrio, With Love  & the Big Ghost Ltd.-produced 3rd album  The Ghost of Albizu . This was all followed up with  Magnum Opus  along with the Vanderslice-produced  Enigma of Dalí  & 4 EPs:  The Most High ,  Prayer, Weed & Music ,  E Pluribus Unum ,  Sunsets in the Ghetto  & of course the Finn-produced  Blood on the Bills . A year & a half after  Painting Houses  though, expectations for  Strapped  were up there. After the titular intro, the first song “Best Dressed” is a drum...

Fuego Base & O.T. the Real are “Moving Base O.T.” (Album Review)

Moving Base O.T. is an east coast hip hop duo consisting of Fuego Base & O.T. the Real. The latter of whom has been making noise in the underground for the past several years now whether it be  The Irishman or  Maxed Out  & the other made his debut over a year ago signing to Black Soprano Family Records & becoming Hartford, Connecticut’s  Biggest Since Camby . O.T. eventually signed to B$F, enlisting araabMUZIK to produce his debut for the label  Zombie  last fall. Fast forward 8 months later, he & Fuego are teaming up to put out their debut together. After the “Real Sopranos” intro, the first song “Arithmetic” starts off the album jumping over a raw boom bap instrumental talking about every dummy wanting to be an earner as well as 2 rappers getting stuck 1 night & it wasn’t them whereas “Battle Scars” featuring Benny the Butcher finds the trio morbidly cautioning that those who think they’r...

Joey Pappas Interview

We had a chance to talk with Joey Pappas on her latest release So Cold Congratulations on the release of your new single So Cold! Can you tell us what inspired this song? Thank you so much! I have always been someone who is ‘all or nothing’ and over the years I feel I have given so much and felt so much that I now struggle to trust anything is real at all. The irony of this song is I am saying that I struggle to express my emotions whilst writing them in a song for the world to hear. I wrote this song to myself, admitting things I have been almost afraid to say out loud and I hope it helps others feel seen. What was the writing process like for this song, did you write it in the midst of your emotions?  My producer, Kirby and I created the beat for this song a while ago and it sat with me for a while and I tried writing to it a couple times and nothing stuck. One day I came home, I felt incredibly low and burnt out, I put the song on and wrote the whole thing from start to fi...

Fury & Tre Lb Link Up for a Dope New Collab EP “You Already Know” (EP Review)

Bristol, Connecticut emcee Fury joined by Detroit, Michigan emcee/producer Tre Lb . The latter starting out accompanied by Southwest Sol as 1/2 of the Chop Shop being the younger brother of Psychopathic Records co-founder Shaggy 2 Dope of the Insane Clown Posse with the other being the founder of Leathal Wreckords, the organizer of the Leathal Weekend festival held in New Hampshire for almost 10 years & even 1/2 of Something Awful alongside Bizarre of prior D12 fame. We’ve never heard both parties on wax together previously but since Tre’s performed at Leathal Weekend 5 with his brother a couple years back, I was more than open about You Already Know heading into it. “Burning Bridges” gets the EP going jumping over pianos & hi-hats explaining the bridge is burned so y’all can’t cross that river at all whereas “Rydin’ Though” produced by Tre Lb himself goes into a cloudy trap direction instrumentally to talk about taking shots & making the show pop soon as they hit ...

Your Old Droog Tells His Life as a “Movie” (Album Review)

Ukrainian-American lyricist Your Old Droog  returning after 2 years for his 9th full-length album. Breaking out through his self-titled debut, many actually first thought he was an alter ego of  Nas  given that their voices are somewhat similar. He eventually became a legend in his own right off later projects such as  Packs  as well as  It Wasn’t Even Close ,  TIME  & the  Nicholas Craven -produced  YOD Wave . The 4 EPs he’s given us since  YOD Stewart ,  Yodney Dangerfield ,  The Yodfather  &  The Shining  weren’t as great in my opinion yet most certainly had their highlights at the same time. So after taking 2023 off, Droog’s releasing a  Movie  to get summer rolling. “Success & Power” produced by Just Blaze couldn’t have been a better choice of an opening track from the grand boom bap production to the lyricism about rappers being in competition with each other ...

Stacc Styles’ 3rd Album & Suburban Noize Records Debut “Live Your Best Life” is a Full Circle Moment for Him (Album Review)

This is the 3rd full-length LP from Tucson, Arizona recording artist Stacc Styles . As the founder of Dope Shop Records, he introduced himself in the spring of 2015 off the debut album  Inside the Ride  followed by the sophomore effort  Mr. Purple  in the fall of 2020. Stacc has also been an affiliate of Suburban Noize Records dating back to being a roadie for the punk band Mower, eventually signing to the west coast underground label this past January. 4 singles later, he’s kicking off the summer & warming everyone up for the 2nd of half 2024 encouraging them to  Live Your Best Life . After the turntablism intro, the title track sets the tone for Stacc’s debut for Subnoize with a psychedelic west coast hip hop banger toasting to having a good time & getting high whereas “Another Day” works in pianos talking about us meant to be here to complete the holy cycle. “Gold Mine” has a bit of a funky pop rap flare with themes of romance, but then one of the ...

Fan Base? or Crime Syndicate?

Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J of the iconic underground hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse appeared on the podcast Drink Champs , hosted by Noreaga , alongside DJ EFN . Shaggy described their past experience where their fanbase, known as Juggalos, was once listed on the FBI National Gang Assessment. The news of their Juggalo title being identified and labeled as a notorious gang alongside other street and prison gangs was initially received as “cool.” However, this classification led to their merchandise being pulled from retail and commercial outlets due to the consequences of being seen as gang-affiliated. Their live performances were sometimes treated like “gang rallies.” Anyone wearing their merchandise or their iconic Hatchet Man logo was targeted as a gang member. The interview is set to be released on Thursday, July 19th. Alla Xul Elu Welcome All Aboard “The Magic Xul Bus” (EP Review)

This is the 3rd EP from Ohio horrorcore trio Alla Xul Elu. Consisting of Billy Obey as well as Joey Black & Lee Carver, they broke out in 2015 as a duo by releasing their first 2 albums  Head of Horns  &  Sci-Co  that same year. This was followed up with their 4/20-themed debut  EP Necronomichron  in 2017 & adding Carver into the fold shortly after, but it wasn’t until Twiztid signed them to Majik Ninja Entertainment in 2018 when the Xul Boys’ music got increasingly better. Their MNE debut  The Almighty  is unquestionably the greatest horrorcore album of the 2010s, their 2019 sophomore EP  Church of Xul  took a much darker approach,  Mauxuleum  made it in the top 10 of my Best Releases of 2020 list despite them ditching their signature boom bap sound for a more industrial, trap metal direction &  Necronomichron 2: Dead by Bong  was a superior sequel to their 4/20 EP. Ahead of Camp Xul 4 weekend howeve...
