Universal Language Speaks Sound Into Existence By Jhantu Randall

It’s the day after Thanksgiving and as the itis, (food induced drowsiness for those who don’t know) begins to wear off, there’s a particular calm that accompanies the chaotic mood that tends to take over the season. It’s that exact feeling that lead me to give the album Sound Shape Color by Universal Language a listen. Still currently in the days of ignorance promoted and mumble rap being the expression, Universal Language’s album is the antithesis of it. Sonically pleasing and lyrically complex without being too verbose, their album “Sound Shape Color” possess’s a trackless that allows you as the listener to not only catch their vibe, but allows you to join in on riding the wave that they have created. With production that harkens back to the day of Digable Planets mixed with a sound that makes a group like Cunninlynguists stand out, Universal language has managed to merge the 2 while still taking it in their own direction without sounding like a knockoff. While not for everyone, this...

pre kai ro – “Ten Outa Ten” (Video)

With PartyNextDoor and Drake dropping some new music, pre kai ro decides he wanted to join in on the fun as well. Today the rising star from Egypt officially delivers his powerful debut video & single “ Ten Outa Ten “. Having offered an exploration into the more vulnerable sides of his persona with his last 2 singles ‘Baby Boy’ and ‘Mercy,’ pre kai ro’s latest offering in the single “Ten Outa Ten” is one that revolves mainly around a showcasing of his newly unhinged levels of bravado. The singer/songwriter seamlessly blends elements of Hip Hop, R&B and Trap music as he successfully revisits his mood in his late 2018 single ‘Blink Twice’ – a more aggressive stance regarding his relationship with love, lust and his position in the music game (Blink Twice is now approaching 1 million streams on Spotify). More prominently focusing on an obviously interesting female figure, kai ro makes it clear he wants nothing to do with her emotionally and goes on to disrespect both her and her ...

Rittz – “Put a Crown On It” (Album Review)

Rittz is a 39 year old rapper from Gwinnett County, Georgia that rose to prominence with his 2011 mixtape White Jesus , which lead to Tech N9ne signing him to Strange Music . He released a total of 4 albums on the label with each one showing his fantastic growth both as an artist & as a person: The Life & Times of Jonny Valiant , Next to Nothing , Top of the Line & Last Call . Once the contract with Strange was up, Rittz formed his own label CNT Records & is making his independent debut with his 5th full-length album. The opener “Asian Fusion” flexes over a clever Chinese sample & then the next song “Feet Up” with Paul Wall talks about being made over a trunk-knocking beat. The track “Sound Check” with Jelly Roll talks about their haters over a tear-jerking instrumental while the song “Politically Correct” is a criticism of just that over a cavernous trap beat. The track “ Toxic ” talks about relationship issues over an acoustic-trap beat while the song “Wake U...

Griselda – “W.W.C.D.” (Album Review)

Griselda is a hardcore hip hop trio from Buffalo, New York consisting of Westside Gunn , Conway the Machine & Benny the Butcher . All 3 of whom have made names for themselves throughout the latter half of this decade with modern East Coast classics like  FLYGOD ,   Supreme Blientele ,  Reject 2 ,   G.O.A.T. (Grimiest Of All-Time) ,   Tana Talk 3   &   The Plugs I Met . Now despite all those projects being put out independently under Griselda Records, the trio have seen fit to team up with Shady Records & make their collective debut album their inaugural release on a major label. After the spoken word intro from Raekwon , the first song “Chef Dreds” finds all 3 members trading bars back & forth with each other over a chilling boom bap beat from Daringer & Beat Butcha (both of whom produced the entire album by themselves). The track “Moselle” serves as the theme song for crack dealers over a frightening instrumental while the son...

Ariano & Jade River – ” The Break Up” (Lyric Video)

SoCal hip hop icon Ariano and Portland producer Jade River  are back one more time, dropping the first single, “ The Breakup ,” from the third installment of their collaborative efforts, Fear is a Liar (Rockets).  Jade’s dark and intense rock-heavy production underscoring Ariano’s drugged-up like cadence, “The Breakup” metaphorically casts Miss Liberty as your woman, inspiring an America where people fight and die in pursuit of chasing wealth and what they think being an American really is. “The Breakup” is the first taste of Ariano and Jade’s new rock-driven sound on the upcoming album,  Fear is a Liar (Rockets).

Mars – “Locked Up a Broad” (Album Review)

This is the 3rd full-length studio album from Bay Area horrorcore veteran Mars , who made his debut in 1998 with  S.I.D.S. (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) . He would go on to drop 2 EPs in the mid-2000s, a mixtape in 2012 & his sophomore full-length entitled  Glockcoma  just a couple years ago. But just a month after his 3rd EP   Murder , Mars is following it up with  Locked Up a Broad . After the intro, we go into the title track. Where Mars touches down on sexual slavery over a woozy instrumental. The next song “Hemophobia” talks about murder over an airy trap beat & while I love how slow the track “Keep Ya Voice Down” is, it’s way too short. The song “Throw It All Away” gets reflective over a pretty acoustic instrumental whereas the track “Isolation” vents about being alone over a cold trap beat. The song “In My Basement” talks about kidnapping a woman over a nocturnal trap beat while the track “Monster” speaks on what he has become over a spacey trap ...

Action Bronson & The Alchemist – “Lamb Over Rice” (EP Review)

This is the 3rd EP from New York rapper, writer, chef & television presenter Action Bronson . Who blew up with release of his first 2 studio albums Dr. Lecter & Well-Done in 2011. This resulted in a joint venture with VICE Music & Atlantic Records along with a couple EPs & mixtapes. The most notable being the Blue Chips duology, Saab Stories & my personal favorite: Rare Chandeliers . Then came Bronson’s major label debut Mr. Wonderful in 2015 which has some of his best songs on there, but the end result would be a more glitzy mixed bag. Bronson’s next effort Blue Chips 7000 would go back to his mixtape roots & it would be his final release on VICE/Atlantic, as he would go onto form the EMPIRE distributed Action Bronson Corporation last year & debuted the imprint with the solid yet somewhat rushed White Bronco . Other than that, Bronson has put out very little music throughout 2019. But with Thanksgiving next week, he has decided to get back with The...

Things kick off with “Redemption”, where Slaine addresses his feeling of atonement over a nocturnal instrumental. The next song “Time is Now” talks about living in the moment over a funky boom bap beat while the track “Still Got My Gun” with the Heavy Metal Kings sees Slaine alongside Vinnie Paz & Ill Bill getting bloodthirsty over a funereal boom bap beat. The track “Trick the Trap” vividly depicts the hard knock life over a grimy instrumental while the song “It Ca...

Rudy Williams – “Scriptures of the Art: Presented in Stereo” (Album Review)

Now this is a brand new album I recommend any raw underground Hip Hop fan to check out!  Up and coming artist out of Traverse City, MI Rudy Williams releases his new groundbreaking album titled “ Scriptures of the Art: Presented in Stereo ” featuring West-Coast legend KXNG Crooked , Griselda Records affiliate Elcamino and lyricist Ty Farris !  His style is cut from the same cloth of the whole griselda records style sound and feeling, yet he puts out some of the most original material we have come across in 2019.  There is a whole ton of new Hip Hop artists being born daily, making it more difficult to stand out today, by Rudy Williams won’t have any problems with that issue as he continues to put of quality independent music! The album kicks off with “TAX” soon after a nostalgic themed intro, where Rudy Williams gets mafioso over a haunting self-produced beat. The next song “Gone so Cold”, with a smoother intoxicating instrumental, Rudy goes off lyrically about his Hi...

Q&A With Rising Michigan Based Underground Hip Hop Artist Rudy Williams

I’m 34 now, so a long time. What specific area are you from? I’m from outside of Detroit, and now live in Northern Michigan in Traverse City. Also, how did you get your emcee name? When I was younger, my Mom used to call me “Rudy” when I was rude or acting up, and my middle name is William, so I just took Rudy Williams as an alias.
