Stream & Purchase "The Way Through" album by Chrissie

This is sort of a sequel to "It's not a game", taking inspiration from recovery strategies and therapy/coaching after a particularly bad (for me) episode of depression. The track titles are meant to be informed by the tracks themselves, NOT the other way round. They are written to be deliberately misleading if read on their own! No sequencers were harmed in the making of this album. Some 'arpeggios' on the Montage were used for some background or percussion patterns (most obviously for 'On The Aire'), but the most of the notes and rhythms were played out by my own fair hands. I hope this gives it a more 'human' feel than earlier albums. Even the mechanistic drums on SHY were all individually hit to give a slightly wonky machine sound. The Way Through by Chrissie

Stream & Purchase "Black Ego" album by Lando Chill

Lando Chill makes music which is classified as hip-hop, but isn't tethered to a single genre, encompassing elements of funk, gospel, jazz, indie rock, psychedelic, and folk. Lance Washington was born and raised in Chicago, but moved to Arizona to attend college. His debut full-length For Mark, Your Son arrived on Mello Music Group in 2016. The album was an intense self-examination inspired by the loss of the rapper's father, who died of a heart attack when Washington was four years old. Lando Chill's second album, The Boy Who Spoke to the Wind, appeared in 2017 and was named #26 on Bandcamp Daily's 100 Best Albums of the Year. The album was influenced by Paulo Coelho's book The Alchemist, and contained a more abstract, experimental sound than his prior releases. Since 2016, Lando Chill has teamed with multi-instrumentalist and producer The Lasso, resulting in a singular sound only possible through a true symbiosis of vocalist and producer. Once again, the duo has ta...

Meet Indie Pop/Rock Musician "Azwel" from Commack, New York

Azwel is a project that involves songwriter Jason Perrillo. For the past 10 years, he has been recording and producing his own independently released albums in his home studio in New York. He describes the music as interesting melodic, catchy pop with songs that are influenced by various styles of music. The sound is often compared to 70's-90s brit pop/rock artists. Known for being an extremely prolific and busy writer, Jason releases at least one album per year and sometimes more.

Listen to "I Love You Like A Brother" album by Alex Lahey

Alex Lahey likes to keep it real. The 24-year-old Australian musician takes her rise up the ranks from music student to ‘an artist with one of the most highly anticipated debut albums of 2017’ in her stride. Lahey sees her life as ordinary: “I fall in love, I have a family, I go out with my friends, I like to have a drink.” However, most people can’t distil those universal experiences into wry, punchy indie-rock songs - three minute odes to millennial angst and all the complicated feelings that come with it. Alex Lahey can. ‘Love You Like A Brother’ is proof. Born and raised in Melbourne, Lahey initially studied jazz saxophone at university but unimpressed with “learning music in such a regimented way” she switched to an arts degree (see her ‘B-Grade University’ EP for more details). Her tenure with cult music collective Animaux allowed Lahey the musical anarchy she yearned - hell, she booked the band their first gig before they’d even prepared a single song. Lahey stepped out on her o...

Good Energy: Eros Guide Volume 1 (review by Jhantu Randall)

The term “Good Energy” has been around forever but coined by the rapper Danny Moses who adopted not just the name but the concept itself. Running on a personalized concept that derives off the idea of balance, he shares its message through the tracks in his catalogue. Never coming off as preachy, the music shares both the good and the bad, along with sprinkling little hints of game that the listener can pick up on if they’re aware of what they’re listening for. I’ve heard some songs from Danny Moses before, if fact I still recommend his album “Dannimals,” but I always look for growth within artists and Danny has shown it. From adopting the name “Good Energy” as a moniker to changing up…or rather, expanding upon the style which he first become known for. In an era where music itself has no defined sound, it’s up to each creator to carve a place where they stand out amongst an overcrowded landscape. Now, right off the top I’m not a fan of this new so called re-emergence of R&B as I f...

John Singleton, from a Fan's Perspective (by Jhantu Randall)

Read More by Jhantu Randall It’s an odd thing to see those you looked to for inspiration suddenly start passing away at a relatively young age. In a small way, their deaths become a reminder of life for the rest of us. John Singleton was born on January 6, 1968 in Los Angeles, California and was true to his hometown as it served as a backdrop for many of his movies. Son of Sheila Ward-Johnson, a pharmaceutical sales executive, and Danny Singleton, a real estate agent he grew up to attend Blair High School where he graduated and went to Pasadena City College. From there he went to USC School of Cinematic Arts where he graduated Kappa Alpha Psi in 1990. Initially enrolling to pursue computer science he was persuaded to try USC’s Filmic Writing program which was designed to take students directly into the Hollywood game. He had always sited Steven Spielberg has a source of inspiration so following that playbook he began to work on his own film. His debut, Boyz n the Hood was released in ...

Stream & Purchase "City Limits" album by PINTY on Bandcamp

Without even releasing a record, Peckham based DJ & MC Pinty has quickly become the talk of the town. ‘Tropical Bleu’, the lead single off debut EP ‘City Limits’, was produced by Archy Marshall - or King Krule - under his DJ JD SPORTS alias. It boasts the hallmarks of Marshall’s woozy production coupled with Pinty’s MC-led approach to the dancefloor. ‘Tropical Bleu’ is a jazz-tinged broken beat roller which sees Pinty gliding effortlessly backwards into the rat race. Given the fluid approach to genre and it’s grounding in Peckham’s vibrant musical scene, Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section International is the rightful home for ‘City Limits’, which traverses hip hop, house, UKG, jazz and darker electronic sounds with ease. Casually exploding onto the scene in 2015 with self- released ‘Midnight Moods’ mixtape, followed by Boiler Room and Just Jam performances, guest appearances on Glenn Astro and Jamie Isaacs tracks, and gracing the cover of the latest Peckham Peculiar, Pinty has risen to...

Listen to “It Ain’t Fair” by Craig Marker on SoundCloud

"It Ain’t Fair" is inspired by a friend of Markers and is a story of resilience and resolve that says adversity doesn't need to define us. Marker went through college with him without knowing the friend's entire experience, which made it easy for Marker to come to his own conclusion about his friend's actions. When his friend eventually told him, the Seattle musician was inspired to share his friend's story. Marker says it was a big reminder and revelation that someone’s story is more than meets the eye.

Listen to "Low Resolution" album by The Perceptionists on Bandcamp

The Perceptionists returned last year with their first new group album in years. The official release led to a tour and even an appearance on NPR's "Tiny Desk Concert" with a live band. But for 2018, they wanted to rough the edges up and revisit it. Enter Paten Locke. Paten had produced a pair of tracks on the original record that were fan favorites, so he seemed like a natural choice to rework 7 of the albums best tracks. On top of that, Paten, Mr. Lif and Akrobatik created an entirely fresh joint titled "Bait." The result is "Low Resolution" an 8 track long record that brings "Resolution" into a completely different light. Low Resolution by The Perceptionists

Broke & Bummy (Article by Jhantu Randall)

In the rap scene, both local and national, braggadocios bars and stories that are so fabricated the only truth is the silhouette which show are routinely accepted by the listeners. Unable to differentiate between what’s genuine and what’s fake, the public falls into a dichotomy of debating lack luster talent. I say that to say this, even though everything seems to be trending that way at the moment, it doesn’t mean that’s what every artist is doing. A very select few have stuck to their plans and visions without wavering and found a way to build another step towards their success, all on their own terms! These are the best words that can be used when it comes to describing the work ethic and just raw ambition of Trevionne Phillips. I had come across a teaser for his new single “Broke & Bummy.” It struck my interest because I had seen Trevionne perform heavily a few years ago, a show at Tony V’s in Everett will always be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about this. ...

Lowkey Continues to Provide a Soundtrack to the Struggle (Album Review by Jhantu Randall)

Let’s be honest, if I said conscious rapper or political hip-hop, a half Iraqi half English man would be the last thing that would come to your mind. I bring this up not only to inform you of an artist who is undoubtedly one of the sharpest minds and arguably one of the most vicious on the mic. Ultimately, with all that talent he’s the best you’ve never heard of. Becoming a fan of this man back when I first heard him in 2011, I was intrigued by the brashness of his lyrics. First hearing him on a song called “Voice of the Voiceless” with Immortal Technique, I was shocked and held in awe when I heard his first lines, “From the West 10 to the West Bank, I write righteous rhymes in my right as I wrestle the devil with my left hand. Never worked for a Zionist, Never been a yes man, My art is like Rembrandt painting pictures of death camps.” For someone to even address Palestine or focus on issues and histories spanning Africa through the middle east and even touching on south Asia, Australi...

Listen to "Late Bloomer" album by Jeremy Jones on Bandcamp

Indiana-bred, LA-based artist and producer Jeremy Jones grew up in a deeply musical community, but one that sounded very different than the radio-ready American R&B of his debut mixtape 'Late Bloomer', out May 31st on Darling Recordings. In Jeremy's mother's house mainstream music was forbidden; the devout, Jamaican family instead listened to gospel music and sang in church. Jeremy found his creative outlet in the orchestra, studying viola performance in college, before moving to Los Angeles with his indie rock band. It's been quite the journey. "Out Here: The 206 Hustle EP" by Suntonio Bandanaz (Album Review by Jhantu Randall)

Read More by Jhantu Randall A few months back I reviewed an album by a collective that went by Swordscool, intrigued by their cinematic sound I was happy to be sent a link to one of the groups members solo EP. Suntonio Bandanaz was the one in that project that grabbed my attention from the first initial listen so to hear him on his new release I was both drawn in and skeptical. The overall production was what gave me the reaction it did so I was worried that I might go into this one already expecting some kind of comparison and hearing everything from that framing, but from the first track, this one built upon what the previous work had already created. Kicking the project off is “The 206 Hustle (Out Here Dance)” which starts out with an introduction that gives visions of a curtain raising before the sound of up-tempo jazz begins to play. The next track immediately goes into a suspenseful pace which also plays out like a second introduction to Suntonio Bandanaz. The juxtaposition of “T...
