The Legal Battle of Lord Quas, Madlib Faces Copyright Dispute

Famed hip-hop DJ and producer Madlib finds himself entangled in a legal dispute over his iconic animated alter ego, Lord Quas. The artist behind the character, Keith Griego, asserts that Lord Quas was originally created for the cover of Madlib’s 1999 single “Microphone Mathematics.” Griego’s lawsuit, filed on April 19 and first reported by Seamus Hughes’ Court Watch, claims that despite Lord Quas’s initial creation for a specific purpose, Madlib has since utilized the character extensively on album covers, music videos, merchandise, and even attempted to trademark the persona. For over 25 years, Lord Quas has been an integral part of Madlib’s artistic expression. Born Otis Jackson Jr., Madlib, hailing from Oxnard, has made significant contributions to hip-hop through collaborative projects with renowned artists like MF Doom , Freddie Gibbs , and J Dilla . Notably, Madlib’s alter ego, Quasimoto , features Lord Quas, whose distinctive pitched-shifted voice adds a unique dimension t...

Unjust Gives Brother Ali’s 8th Album “Love & Service” a Warm, Unquantized Sound (Album Review)

Minneapolis, Minnesota activist & battle emcee Brother Ali teaming up with Oakland, California producer Unjust for his 8th full-length LP only 4 & a half years after the Evidence-produced  Secrets & Escapes . Exploding within the underground off his 2003 sophomore effort  Shadows in the Sun  & of course his 2007 follow-up  The Undisputed Truth , he would continue this string of acclaimed releases with  Us  as well as the Jake 1-produced  Mourning in America & Dreaming in Color  and  All the Beauty in This Whole Life . Can’t forget to mention Ali’s debut EP  Champion  turning 20 in a couple weeks & his debut mixtape  Left in the Deck  either. It’s been a few years since we last heard from him on his 4th EP  Brother Minutester  which marked his departure from Rhymesayers Entertainment after nearly 2 decades. Blueprint’s 5th EP “Falling Down” Details the Hardships He’s Been Facing (EP Review)

Columbus, Ohio emcee/producer Blueprint returning 6 years after his 10th full-length studio album  2-Headed Monster  by putting out his 5th EP. Starting in 1997 by forming the trio Greenhouse alongside Inkwel & Manifest, he would later become their only remaining original member by 2009 following the other 2 departing & Illogic taking their place ever since. As far as his solo output goes: Printmatic branched out on his own beginning in 2003 off  The Weightroom , but his 3rd LP  1988  backed by Rhymesayers Entertainment would become his most acclaimed body of work couple years later & subsequently my introduction to him. I also enjoy his work with RJD2 as the duo Soul Position, the experimental  Adventures in Counter-Culture  & even Greenhouse’s 3rd album  Bend But Don’t Break  equally as much personally. However only a day after  Respect the Architect  celebrated it...

Swedish Emcee/Producer Why-D Takes It Back to the Golden Era With His New Single and Video, “The Veteran (Out to Get the Props)”

Malmö, Sweden’s own Why-D takes it back to the glory days of Yo! MTV Raps and the Golden Era with his new single and video, “The Veteran (Out To Get The Props).” Paying homage to the late ‘80s and early ‘90s isn’t just a style choice for Why-D, it’s out of respect for a time period that made him the artist he is.  “This is the era that shaped me, and that’s what I was trying to bring back with this video,”  the rapper/producer says.  “The Kangol hats I’m wearing symbolize that I’m now a veteran in the game who was influenced by veterans before me.” In addition to Kangol, you’ll see plenty of other “old school,” though still very sought-after, fashion in the video like FILA, Polo, and Champion, among others. Beyond the retro visuals, the track itself sounds like it emerged from that time period thanks to Why-D’s own sample-flipping production and slick talk-heavy bars.  Check out the visuals and head over to your  preferred digital retailer or streaming plat...

Stretch also formed the duo Bill & Isiah with Valid, introducing themselves a year ago on their eponymous debut paying homage to the 80s in the process. However to start the 2nd quarter of the year, he’s cooking up an open letter  To the West Coast…with Love . “L.A.” appropriately starts the EP by setting the tone as a warm, slick tribute to the entertainment capital of the...

Brighton, England producer/emcee Leaf Dog of amongst the best UK hip hop groups in recent memory The Four Owls as well as the 3 Amigos & Brothers of the Stone continuing his crazy 2024 run by releasing his 8th full-length solo LP. Branching out on his own in 2011 with From a Scarecrow’s Perspective , the sophomore effort 6 years later Dyslexic Disciple quickly became his most well-regarded body of work yet & I enjoyed Live from the Balrog Chamber at the beginning of 2020 just as much. However in 2024 alone he’s released a total of 4 albums so far: Photosynthesis , Don’t Scare the Crows Now , Outstanding in My Field & more recently Anything is Possible from a couple weeks ago. Much like January though, Leaf’s giving us 2 albums in 1 month by quickly following it up with When Sleeping Giants Wake . After the intro, the first song “Victory” begins in the form of a crooning sample mixed with kicks & snares explaining that this is everything that his crew dreamed abo...

The intro gets us started with a symphonic trap instrumental tellin’ those who’ve never been to Alaska not experiencing 20 hours of darkness & that he isn’t your average $1M person whereas “Ghetto Gospel” featuring Elcamino works in a ghostly sample mixed with hi-hats to talk about being on...

DJ Concept connects with Buffalo lyricist Y.N.X. 716 on their collaborative extended player,  Conceptual Thoughts . Despite its concise 15-minute duration, the six track EP packs a powerful punch as YNX skillfully navigates the diverse musical landscape crafted entirely by DJ Concept.  The album takes its audience on a sonic journey, seamlessly transitioning from classic hip-hop vibes on tracks like “Mainstream,” to ethereal backdrops like “Beautiful Noise,” concluding with a feel good banger on “Long Way Up.”  Throughout the album, YNX articulates his thoughts with compelling bars such as  “I’m day dreaming with my eyes open, it’s no discussion once my mind spoken, might have been broke but never broken, its like lyrical emotion for the chosen, bars potent like dope in the crack era, I ain’t boasting.”   Expect nothing short of raw beats and bars throughout this wistful collaboration,  available now through all major digital retailers and streaming p...

B.A.R.S. Murre’s 5th LP “Jewelry Store Shootouts” Refines Himself Artistically (Album Review)

New Jersey emcee B.A.R.S. Murre returning from a 4-year hiatus for the 5th full-length studio album in his discography. Signing to Black Soprano Family Records over a decade ago for his debut  Chicken & Cake , he would continue to follow this up with  Dead Nasty as well as  Whimsical  &  Black Tanita respectively. However nearly 3 & a half years since the last LP  Husky Marinara  including the fact that B$F’s been growing as a label in recent years, Murre’s returning for some Jewelry Store Shootouts. The title track has a funky boom bap flare to the instrumental talking about being on his way to Philly for a new piece until everything goes wrong whereas “Guess Who” featuring Rick Hyde & produced by Johnny Slash keeps it grimy asking to take a guess as to who they just served. “Like That” featuring Loveboat Luciano works in a flute with kicks & snares lookin’ to shake everything since it’s more than rap just before the symphonic/...

“Connecticut Casual 2” Changes the Outlook of Apathy’s Career (Album Review)

Connecticut underground MC/producer Apathy releasing a sequel to  Connecticut Casual  as his 9th full-length solo LP. Emerging only 2 decades back as a member of the Demigodz & the Army of the Pharaohs collectives founded by Open Mic & Vinnie Paz respectively, he was also signed to Atlantic Records at one point even though he eventually left due to creative differences. Since then The Alien Tongue has built up quite the solo discography on his own, with my favorites being  Honkey Kong!  as well as  The Widow’s Son  or more recently  Where the River Meets the Sea . &  King of Gods. No Second  fully produced by Stu Bangas. Almost a year & a half later, it only makes sense to commemorate the upcoming 10 year anniversary of  Connecticut Casual  by enlisting Playa Haze to fully produce  Connecticut Casual 2. “Connecticut Formal” is a jazzy opener to t...

Stetsasonic Returns to Form on “Here We Go Again”, First New Album in Over 30 Years (Album Review)

Stetsasonic is the first ever hip hop band from Brooklyn, New York consisting of Daddy-O, MC Delite, Wise & Bobby Simmons. They would only put out 3 full-length albums together during the late 80s/early 90s, but remained inactive as a unit although what they did would eventually pave the way for The Roots. But after teasing a comeback by releasing singles over the past 3 years, the band is getting back together for their 4th LP executive produced by Public Enemy frontman Chuck D. “Message in Our Music” is an old school-inspired opener produced with C-Doc talking about the message in their music has always been clear asking if you have what it takes to escape & change your fate whereas “(Now Y’all Giving Up) Love” works in these triumphant horns to boasting their return after over 3 long decades. Mala Reignz & Smoothe da Hustler both join Stet on the first part of a “Cypher” with Smoothe having my personal favorite of the 2 features, but then “Lolita” gets into their story...
