Some Africans Have Long Seen a Big Belly As a Sign of Wealth. It’s Killing Them

Image
By EVELYNE MUSAMBI 12:00 AM EDT, May 24, 2025 NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — In many African cultures, a big belly has long been seen as a sign of wealth. But this perception is proving deadly as deaths due to obesity -related illnesses rise. In Kenya, overweight politicians are often called Boss or Mkubwa — Swahili for “big man” — by constituents, with their girth symbolizing prosperity. Younger politicians, including the governors of Nairobi and Mombasa, have begun speaking publicly about weight loss. Obesity contributes to non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, which have become Kenya’s leading cause of death. The health ministry says they are responsible for 39% of fatalities annually. In a country where the government has said almost a third of the population is still unable to fulfill food needs, 13% adults are obese, according to the 2025 World Obesity Atlas. The contrast highlights the country’s growing inequality and the popularity of fast and processed foods by those with r...

Back to Fumitaka Anzai in 1984's Chikkun Takkun

Image
I posted Anzai's first from 1982 here , and as mentioned earlier I've always really loved that one.  So I was highly curious to hear this second album-- if it's as interesting as the first one.  Needless to say, we can answer with a partial negative.  But the search is always worth it, given the gems that turn up here and there.  You can also see from the database page, kind of, that there is a mixture of artists doing the tracks here.  Though I did give up, short attention span as is common nowadays, trying to collate which ones are from Anzai and if they're the good ones. Anyways, the whole sounds very much like a library video game album, with all the tracks a minute or two long.  Some of the better ones do have prog bases to them, for ex. the A 6 which is Stravinskyesque dissonances: A lot of electronic noodling appears, as on B1: The libraryish B15: source https://progressreview.blogspot.com/2025/05/back-to-fumitaka-a...

Gilbert O'Sullivan - BBC Sessions, Volume 3: Sight and Sound, Golders Green Hippodrome, London, Britain, 1-28-1978

Image
This is the third and last album I have of singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan performing for the BBC. Like Volume 2, it's a short concert. Gilbert O'Sullivan had a lot of hit songs and popular albums from 1970 to 1975. After that, his popularity dropped considerably. He did have one last hit single in 1980 with "What's in a Kiss?" But at the time of this concert, his popularity was at an all-time low for him. His most recent album, "Southpaw," released in late 1977, didn't even make the album charts anywhere. New musical styles like disco, punk, and new wave were all the rage. It didn't help that he was having trouble with his record company. He discovered they were ripping him off. After years of legal trouble, in 1978, he won about 45 million dollars (adjusted to its 2025 value). But presumably the record company retaliated by failing to promote him. He later said the legal battle effectively put his music career on hold for years.  So ...
