Gender Balance in Leadership: Is L.A. County’s All-Female Board of Supervisors Fair to Men?

In November 2020, Los Angeles County marked a historic milestone by electing an all-female Board of Supervisors for the first time in its 150-year history. This development was celebrated as a significant achievement in gender representation and equality. However, this unprecedented composition has sparked discussions about the implications of gender homogeneity in governance. While the advancement of women in leadership roles is commendable, concerns arise regarding the potential for inadvertent gender bias and the underrepresentation of men in county leadership. Historically, the Board was often dominated by men, earning the moniker "five little kings" due to the significant influence each supervisor wielded over the county's vast population. The transition to an all-female board led to the media adopting the term "five little queens." The shift from an all-male to an all-female board highlights the importance of balanced gender represe...

Boldy James Drops “Hommage” Ahead of Next Friday’s “Alphabet Highway” (Album Review)

Detroit veteran  Boldy James  enlisting local trap producer Antt Beatz for his 13th studio LP. Breaking out in the fall of 2013 off his  Alchemist  produced debut  M.1.C.S. (My 1st Chemistry Set) , the Detroit lyricist would later go on to land a contract with  Nas ’ independent label Mass Appeal Records for a little while before getting locked up. Once coming home, Uncle Al would help get his name back out there once getting out by dropping the  Boldface  EP around Christmas 2019 & then the sophomore album  The Price of Tea in China  at the beginning of last year. This was followed up with the Sterling Toles-produced  Manger on McNichols  which was as equally fantastic, but the  Griselda Records -backed  Versace Tape  EP was a tad bit disappointing given how rushed it was.  Bo Jackson  though would become his most critically acclaimed work to date &  Super Tecmo B...

Termanology Embarks on an Audible Journey Through Life with “Things I Seen” (Album Review)

Lawrence, Massachusetts emcee/producer Termanology  linking up with Detroit, Michigan producer  Bronze Nazareth  for his 13th studio LP. The leader of the  ST. da Squad  collective, he would also form the duos G.O.Y.A. (Gunz Or Yay Available) with  Shortfyuz  as well as 1982 with  Statik Selektah or Fizzyology with  Lil’ Fame  & more recently Teknology with  Tek . You also have a dozen albums of his that he’s released by himself, with standouts including the sophomore effort  Politics as Usual  or  Bad Decisions  & the  Dame Grease -produced  Set in Stone  to name a few. 3 months after Teknology’s eponymous debut, Term’s putting the  Things I Seen  on wax. After the “Hex Murda” intro, the title track begins with this soulful boom bap beat talking about simply wanting to live whereas “Make It Flood”keeps it rugged instrumentally talking about being as smooth of a...

Ramson Badbonez Returns to High Focus Records with “White Rabbit” Prod. by Leaf Dog (Album Review)

London, England, United Kingdom emcee Ramson Badbonez teaming up with the infamous Leaf Dog for his 15th studio LP. A member of the Task Force, he would eventually sign to High Focus Records in 2013 making his debut for the label with  A Year in the Life of Oscar the Slouch  that same winter.  Hypnodic ,  Jason Bonez ,  Mic Day the 13th ,  Death Mask  &  Fusion  would all come out under the Hove, East Sussex imprint with  White Rabbit  now becoming the 7th raising my expectations with Leaf’s heavy involvement. After the “Nothing Stops Him” intro, the first song “Hijack” is this sample-driven boom bap opener letting y’all know what he’s all about whereas “The Great” maintains a boom bap edge working in these horns boasting his lyrical technicality. “More 4 Less” featuring Jazz T & Smellington Piff instrumentally kinda reminds me of Mobb Deep talking about them being lyrically gifted until he looks back on getting called u...

Reuben Vincent’s 3rd Mixtape “Hit Me When You Get Here” Prod. by 9th Wonder Gives a Taste of Their Upcoming LP (Mixtape Review)

Charlotte, North Carolina emcee  Reuben Vincent preluding his upcoming 3rd album by putting out his 3rd mixtape. Emerging under the original moniker Esau, his debut tape  IDOL.escent  would catch the attention of  9th Wonder  & would sign Reuben to Jamla Records in 2016. His debut album  Myers Park  would be released the next fall followed by the previous EP  Boy Meets World , the latter of which resulted in Roc Nation Records handling distribution for Reuben’s future output much like fellow Jamla signee  Rapsody  beginning with the sophomore effort  Love is War  almost 2 & a half years ago continuing to elevate his popularity.  General Admission  was ok in comparison & with the next LP set to be fully produced by 9th Wonder, they’re dropping off  Hit Me When You Get Here  in anticipation of it. After the “Mama” intro, the first song “Mama’s Prayer” begins with this soulful inst...

This is the 7th studio LP from Dallas, Texas emcee Nowaah the Flood . Breaking out in the summer of 2018 by releasing his first EP  Trill Life Mathematiks  around the same time as  Nas ’ 11th album  NASIR  fully produced by Ye or the Nazi formerly known as Kanye West , he would go on to drop his last 19 EPs along with The Nowaah & the Dewer’s eponymous debut album and roughly 6 proper full-lengths. Standouts for me personally include the  DirtyDiggs -produced  Private Stock , the  Estee Nack  collaborative effort  Planted Seeds ,  The Infallible , the  Stu Bangas -produced  Respectfully , the  Giallo Point -produced  Right Over Left  & it’s sequel, the  DJ D-Styles -produced  Crème de la Crème , the  Kyo Itachi -produced  Sudan Samurai Scrolls  & recently  Plans of the Diligent  last Thanksgiving. Almost exactly 4 months later, DJ D-Styles is ret...

Introducing Rising Artist: AliJack

AliJack  is an emerging biracial artist, with a heritage that includes Black roots from Dubai and White ancestry from the UK. He has gained recognition for his distinctive musical style and East Coast sound, characterized by his candidness, quick temper, and dry wit. In his music, he weaves narratives that explore themes of addiction to both sex and substances, while also employing a thoughtful approach to lyricism that presents his words in a more intricate yet accessible manner than one might anticipate. His debut project, “Grape Tape,” was a mixtape that highlighted his rapping skills. Following that, he released “Wave and Shine,” a collaborative effort with his brother that showcased a more focused direction. Currently, AliJack is in the process of creating a new album. Listeners should check out his popular single “End Of The Day” from the “Grape Tape,” which incorporates samples from Mo M*ney Mo Murda/Real n*ggas AZ/Dipset, along with his recent works such as “Wave...

What To Do When Your Card Declines After You've Eaten at a Restaurant 👀

What Happens If Your Card Is Declined at a Restaurant and You’ve Already Eaten?  So, you’ve just enjoyed a great meal, maybe even splurged on dessert, and now it’s time to pay the bill. You confidently hand over your card, only to have the server return with an awkward smile and those dreaded words: “I’m sorry, but your card was declined.”   Your stomach, which was just celebrating a delicious feast, suddenly drops. You glance around, half-expecting security to escort you out like a diner dashing criminal. But don’t panic—this is an awkward moment, not a crisis (yet). Here’s what happens next and how to handle it like a pro.   Step 1: Stay Calm and Try Again    Before assuming you’ve gone completely broke, remember that card declines happen for all sorts of reasons—bank security measures, expired cards, or even a glitch in the restaurant’s payment system. Ask the server to try again, and if that doesn’t work, consider using tap-to-pay or ma...

Bishop Nehru’s 4th Album “Now or Never” Enjoyably Switches Up From the Sounds of “Solace in Shadows” (Album Review)

This is the self-produced 4th studio LP from New York emcee/producer  Bishop Nehru . Starting out dropping a couple beat tapes before emerging in the underground off the solid debut mixtape  Nehruvia , he profile would only begin to increase in 2014 by signing to Mass Appeal Records & form the duo NehruvianDOOM alongside  the late MF DOOM  & putting out an overlooked self-titled effort together that same fall. Bishy would leave Mass Appeal a couple years later to drop 2 full-lengths  Elevators  &  My Disregarded Thoughts  on his own, both of which I look at as some of the best shit he’s ever done. He would also drop 7 EPs & 5 more mixtapes, the most recent of the 2 bei ng  Kult Life: From Pain to Paintings . He found  Solace in Shadows  in November & has returned 4 months later with  Now or Never . The synth-driven trap instrumental on “Back Around” caught me off guard at firs...

Tierre Diaz’ 2nd Album “Maniflex” is the Most Important of His Career (Album Review)

Worcester, Massachusetts emcee Tierre Diaz returning 6 years after his full-length debut studio album  Energy  by making the sophomore effort his Armed Robbery Entertainment debut. Ever since performing the Clown Drip Stage at the 21st annual Gathering of the Juggalos which is the only Gathering that I’ve ever been to in my lifetime, he’s been seeing the biggest successes of his career whether it be DJ Clay signing him to A•R or forming the B.A.R.S. supergroup over 12 months ago exactly. He performed at this year’s Juggalo Weekend, so it makes sense to drop  Maniflex  a month later. “The Wave” begins with a cloudy trap instrumental talking about everyone else being in a whole different lane compared to him whereas the title track keeps it atmospheric so he can shine as if he never even left. “Prime” goes for a guitar-driven trap direction keeping focused & never noticing others leading into “B.O.T.H. (Blood On The Hood)” showing a bit of a Memphis influence...

How One Defendant’s Fight for Due Process Could Reshape Public Defense

A Systemic Breakdown in Criminal Defense   A battle over due process is unfolding in a Pasadena, CA courtroom, and its outcome could have far-reaching implications for criminal defendants and public defenders across the nation. At the center of this legal storm is a fundamental question: Can a criminal justice system that claims to uphold the Constitution allow defense attorneys to fail in their most basic duty—protecting their client’s rights?   One defendant’s harrowing journey through the criminal justice system has laid bare alarming procedural violations, raising concerns about whether due process and the right to effective legal representation are being systematically undermined. His case reveals troubling inconsistencies in competency evaluations, violations of attorney-client privilege, and defense counsel's failure to uphold their professional and constitutional obligations.   The defendant—whose identity we will refer to as Michael Bernard Tayl...
